Optimize loading speed of website pages

Is there anyway to optimize the loading speed of my website? My site seems to load slower than normal. Website is: mercenarypb.com

Also, does anyone know of a good SEO add on that alters the url's. I want something that is going to make the urls a little more search engine friendly (but only if this is truly helpful)

There are several optional settings which will help reduce server load a bit, but it really comes down to having a smoking fast server and lots of ram, and caching, for your sql.

I've found the SEO URL contribution can be problematic for search engines like Google. It may make the site look a bit more user friendly, but can have negative effects on your search performance, in some cases.

Re: Optimize loading speed of website pages

http://mercenarypb.com is not gzipped
Actual Page Size: 26.87 KB
Size if Gzipped: 5.51 KB
Potential Savings: 79.49%

You can turn on the gzip feature under your admin panel located in

admin>configuration>gzip compression.

Also, if you're using some javascripts or have large css files, you can also try and use:

Css javascript loader

Also, don't forget to optimize your database from time to time. This can also be done from your admin panel.

admin>tools>store manager>optimize database

Hope this help, but like thedjphat said, it ultimately boils down to your web server's performance.

Download FireBug for FF and the Google PageSpeed addon....

Page Speed Score: 75/100 (C Rating)

There are 5 CSS files served from mercenarypb.com. They should be combined into as few files as possible.

There is more, but these things (the easiest to fix) will bring you up to about an 83/100.

While this is all good stuff...

Getting away from GD as your host will have a much larger impact on speed than any other thing you can accomplish

Getting an ISP (+- $50/mo), using Zen Cart to run your shop (free), using GD as your web host = gate raped

lol sorry I just had to toss this in. No offense, I'm just enjoying some usual dose of urban dictionary atm :D

If I want to take your minifying advice, would I just use the Minify "save as" option in the page speed dialog box? Then upload the minifyed file to my site?

Make sure you always back up the original file as well

Re: Optimize loading speed of website pages

I used google's Page Speed many times but I prefer online tool http://siteloadtest.com now because Page Test generates too much ################, "2% reduction" is pathetic, really.

According to siteloadtest you need to do the following

  1. [easy] combine all css files into one
  2. [easy] minify css and js files
  3. [easy] optimize: CKBanner1.jpg and logo.jpg
  4. [easy] get rig of one broken image
  5. [easy] enable compression for all text resources (incl js and css).
  6. [hard] combine small images using CSS sprites
  7. [hard] balance site's loading between subdomains

you can do 1-5 only because you don't have too many page elements

Re: Optimize loading speed of website pages

Also, if you have any web 2.0 plug-ins such as this on your documents, do understand that it will significantly slow your page load depending on their server status.

Eliminate any external contents in your website if you have any, such as a hot-linked images or iframe.
