[Done v1.5.0] New Version v1.39H Doesnt Show Product Description?

Ok i ve downloaded the new version of zencart and done 2 fresh installs. with nothing added so very basic site at the moment, not even a template applied.

I add a product but even when i go to preview the "product name" i just entered doesnt show? so i press confirm, then it appears. ? however when i then go back to edit the product ? everything is gone?

Any advice please? as im not sure what it could be?
Ive got other sites running zencart but not this version?

Well, it's not a Zen Carr bug, because 1.3.9h works fine if installed properly and if the server is set up correctly.

Your site has re-written URLs, and that's not the default Zen Cart template, so this is not a standard Zen Cart installation "with nothing added so very basic site at the moment, not even a template applied".

Actually, if you look at the website of the original poster his site now appears to be working correctly.

This distribution having been installed by myself and others hundreds of times without this issue only points to something that you have done or your server details

What do you expect us to tell you? It isn't a bug in Zen Cart - so it has to be something you are doing wrong, or else your FTP programme is not working correctly, or else the hosting is the problem.

It appears that you have some mussed up admin files

What more can the community do??

I copy admin\includes\modules\product\collect_info.php from 1.39g and bug is gone

Now, My hosting is in GoDady. I have PHP4. Probably, htmlspecialchars is a problematic in PHP4 ?
I can not update to PHP5, because I am not sure, that my other shops, working with zencard 1.38a still will work.

Any idea?

I totally agree. However, if Zencart lists PHP 4 as meeting the minimum requirements, then Zencart should work with PHP 4.

Perhaps it is time to up the minimum requirements to >=PHP 5.3 (Since 5.2 is now EOL), with a disclaimer stating that it MAY work with <PHP 5.3 but no guarantees.

Well the earlier post seemed to suggest that the user was having these problems because he was using PHP 4.
5.2 isn't EOL. It's fully supported and in more common use than 5.3 at this point, especially by the biggest hosts.
According to the developers of PHP, 5.2.x is EOL: http://www.php.net/archive/2010.php#id2010-12-16-1 and it has been only receiving critical security fixes on a case by case basis since 5.2.14 such as the nasty bug that prompted 5.2.17.
PHP 4 is also still widely used by the bigger hosts such as 1&1 and GoDaddy ... still we all advice people to ditch it. Same applies to 5.2.x.

Anyway. I do get where you are coming from though as I can imagine the project will not be willing to specify what may be seen as too bleeding edge requirements for various reasons. Not that I agree with that but that's something else and irrelevant anyway.

Thanks for the update on PHP 5.2. I'd seen the security fixes continuing to flow. However, it can't be discounted until the majority of hosts have moved up and since, as you rightly point out, two of the biggest have many servers still stuck on PHP4 (as well as a host of other "age-related" problems) that's not going to happen soon.

Hell, it even runs on Windows (though I don't recommend that either!).

Afraid it is. It's going to happen this year. PHP 5.3+ will be the minimum for most hosts, whether we like it or not. The reason is PCI/DSS compliancy scans. A few of the smaller PCI Scanning companies are already refusing to accept 5.2 (even the latest versions with patches) and specify 5.3 as the minimum they will accept. Where they have led the others will soon follow. Constant tightening of their requirements is one of their reasons for existence.

Of course, some of the very large hosting companies may not give a hoot about their servers being PCI/DSS compliant but most will have to care.

To be fair to them, how can anyone running an environment that only receives "... critical security updates on a case by case basis" (I.E. some security flaws will not be fixed) claim to be running a secure environment?

As I said earlier, I'll make the app >=5.3.5 minimum with a disclaimer stating it will work for as low as 4.3.9 but that this is not advised and you are on your own if you choose to use these.
