Can I run a store without SSL?

I am in the process of learning how to run a Zen cart store. So I have not opened one yet and I have not purchased SSL from my host.

But I would need to put it online and test in real if it works.

Can I run it without SSL? I mean just to see if a real purchase could get through. Nothing else. I will purchase one if SSL is really needed.

Thanks for any assistance.
Linda

Re: Can I run a store without SSL?

Depends on your payment processor. You can test Paypal without an SSL, I know.

You can test with the Check/Money Order module, if you just want to test the non-payment functions.

Re: Can I run a store without SSL?

If I do not purchase SSL, would it also work for my store to receive payments?

Re: Can I run a store without SSL?

Using Paypal, yes. Google Checkout and all merchant account processors I'm aware of require SSL.

It's a good idea to get an SSL certificate anyway, though. Many customers aren't comfortable entering their personal information without seeing the padlock.

Yes, but.......

Do not attempt to send your credit card information/personal information through an unsecured connection, for the sake of you and your customer's safety.

Internet is a very dangerous place these days. Sending sensitive data via insecure network is like having your computer opened to the world without a firewall and no administrative password.

Definitely get one like stevesh said if you plan to use some payment gateways.

Re: Can I run a store without SSL?

You can use your host's shared SSL if you don't want to purchase your own. It's not pretty but it does give you the lock and it is secure. If your host doesn't offer shared SSL, maybe a new host? (I personally think you should be offered this with any hositng package.)

Re: Can I run a store without SSL?

There is not a mandate to use SSL with the SIM methods (IPN / Express) for Paypal. However, it is required for WPP.

Just remember, without SSL you are legally and financially responsible in case of breach of customer data. No merchant provider / bank other than Paypal will let you run without SSL as they will deny activation of you account until you do.
