How to make attribute required before moving forward

I have searched and searched for an answer but have not a found one. I have a new store in zen cart. 1.3.9h. I want to make the buyer pick a color for an item before he can move on, otherwise he will purchase an item and we won't know what color he wanted. I am confused on what I found in the FAQ's and forums and I don't know what is applicable at this point.

Can anybody point me in the right direction?

Have you searched in the tutorials for "require attribute"? The first two articles in the results for that give all the information you need.

Ok when i set a attribute to an item like a color that must be specified and I enable the Required button on the attribute it is letting customers add items to the cart without giving a required attribute. What could be causing this??

Go HERE, and try to add a ring to the shopping cart without first making a size selection...
