Help creating a dummy site

I am trying to create a dummy site to test out some new designs. I copy my files into a subdirectory, however, the files in the subdirectory are still linked to the stylesheet in my main directory. How can I change that?

For example, if my subdirectory is called "demo", I want all the files to be linked to the stylesheet in the demo subdirectory, not to the stylesheet in the main directory.

Your second site configure.php files are most likely pointing to your live site and database

Yes, editing the configure.php files does that, but there is more you need to do in order to avoid messing up your main site and database.

I got the dummy site up, but I am missing the products and several other customizations that I made. My real website is queencharlottesoaps.com. My dummy site is queencharlottesoaps.com/test. As you can see, none of the sideboxes are there and neither are the products.

I am guessing this has to do with the database. If that is correct, how would I fix this with phpMyAdmin?

To get the sideboxes in a newly activated template, you need to reset them in Tools > Layout Boxes Controller.

Is there a way to fix the rest, like add the products?

I figured this last part out on my own. For those wondering, export your main database via phpMyAdmin. Then import that .sql file into your new database.

Something else to remember is that one needs to Password protect their dummy / test area. This will prevent Search Engines from indexing and prevent double indexing; which would be a bad thing. Your Hosting control panel should allow you to this.

OK, let me be more specific.

When you have a dummy / test area you do not want "anyone" to access it. It is solely for "your" benefit and no one else needs to see it... period. And that is why you Password protect it.
