Free with specific purchase amount kicking out coupon

Hi. I have searched and searched so I thought maybe someone has had this same problem.

I help administer an online store. We offer a free gift with a minimum purchase. We also give out coupons to prize winners. Here is the rub.

1. Customer purchases say 10.00 in product and qualifies for the free item.
2. Customer has a 10.00 coupon
3. Customer enters the coupon and the cart wont take it and puts the free-with-purchase product at full price and wont take the coupon.

What we are looking to do is allow the coupon holder to make a purchase for the 10.00, use the coupon, and get the 10.00 discount and not the free-with-purchase product since they are not actually spending any real money. I am not sure if that makes sense or not.

If anyone knows where I can find directions on how to do this, it would be greatly appreciated. If I have confused anyone, please accept my apologies.

I have a Discount Coupon for $10.00 off and only want it to work on Product A ... so I set up my Discount Coupon for $10.00 off and set the Restrictions for:
Top Category: Deny
Product A: Allow

I add Product A to the Cart and go to checkout and enter the Discount Coupon code and if the Product A is $10.00 then the product is now $10.00 less the $10.00 Discount Coupon so it is now Free ... if the Product A is $25.00 then the Product A is $25.00 less the $10.00 Discount Coupon so it is now $15.00 ...

What part(s) of these scenarios are not working for you?

What version of Zen Cart are you using?

Clean install or an Upgrade?

Version 1.3.8 Fresh install Feb 2nd 2010.

Maybe this will explain it better.

Free product with 10$ Purchase (purchase can be any products)
Free product is added to cart when it hits the $10.00 Thresh hold.
Customer only wants to purchase $10.00 because that is what their coupon is valid for.
Customer Enters Coupon Code for $10.00
The cart then returns to the full product pricing, not allowing the coupon to bring the total to zero and leaves the free gift in the cart. (albeit it is still at zero because the threshhold has been met.)
The coupon is set to deny the free gift. However, before it was changed, it still was not letting the customer get the coupon. I guess what I am trying to figure out is how to get the free gift to come out of the cart if a coupon is used and the remaining total is less than the 10.00 total. IE Customer purchases 15.00 of products, uses a 10.00 coupon, leaves 5.00 balance due, the coupon still kicks out and we are back to 15.00 and the gift is still in the cart (free of course.)

I don't know if there are any add ons or anything else other than the version. I have seen it work correctly with other sites I have shopped on before.

Maybe im not making sense, but I know there has to be a way.
If I am not....i am so sorry.

If I make a Discount Coupon for $10.00 and set the minimum to $25.00 and set a restriction that Product A is not allowed with:
Product A: Deny

I then have to have a minimum order of $25.00 that may not include Product A in that amount and once the amount of $25.00 is reached, where Product A is not part of the $25.00, the $10.00 will be applied with the Discount Coupon ...

NOTE: there are a lot of bugs and security issues in v1.3.8 that have been fixed in v1.3.9 that could be affecting your results ...

You might try to install a test copy of v1.3.9h with a test database and try what you are attempting to accomplish to see if this has resolved your issue ...
