White page with 1.3.8 version in PHP 5.3.4

White page with 1.3.8 version in PHP 5.3.4

I am upgrading to a new server with CentOS x64 PHP 5.3.4 and all my zen cart sites made with 1.3.8a show a White Page.
Can someone please help identify the reason they behave that way and how they can be adapted?
I can see that zc 1.3.9 works in the new server, but I would like to adapt my older zc 1.3.8 version to work with the new environment.

You've already identified the problem that 1.3.8a does not work with PHP 5.3+. There may be a patch for it in the downloads section, but the correct course is to upgrade 1.3.8+ sites to 1.3.9+
1.3.8+ is no longer secure, even with available security patches applied
