Shipping issue - Gift packs

Hi,
i have setup my shipping using the table (ie 1 item = $6, 2-5 items = $12 etc)
My issue is that if someone purchases a gift pack it shows up as one item so only charges $6 freight, but in most cases are made up of 4 or 5 items in which i need it to charge the higher freight.

Any ideas on how to over come this ??

One way is to charge shipping per item instead of per parcel.
