How to handle a core charge

I manage an automotive parts site. They have several remanufactured products that involve a "core charge". That means that an extra fee is charged initially but is refunded when the old part is returned.

Ideally, I would like the product to have the price without the core charge show up on the product listing. The product listing would clearly state the fact that there is a core charge and specify the amount. But then, in the shopping cart a separate line item listing the core charge would appear just below the main product.

Anyway to do this?

You can add it as an attribute and mark it as required so they can't add to cart without adding the core.

Explain what the core is and that it would be refunded upon receiving their core back.
