footer and categories

I have looked everywhere in the files for this but I must not have the right places. I am trying to modify the way the categories display on the side.

This is the categories.

I am trying to remove the -> from the main categories and the |_ from the sub categories but I cant seem to find in the php files, that specific phrase listed. any ideas?

Also, where do I go to modify the footer color? right now I have the main theme and then this big white block at the bottom for a footer with all the information in it.. Is that in css where I change it?

Again, any help will be great.

admin > config > layout settings >
Categories Separator between links Status
Categories Separator between the Category Name and Count Info
Categories Separator between the Category Name and Sub Categories

You can see the css rules for the footer in the tpl_footer.php file
includes/templates/YOUR_TEMPLATE/common/tpl_footer.php

You can also add the rules you like, and add them in the styelsheet.css in
includes/templates/YOUR_TEMPLATE/css/stylesheet.css

Hmm.. I looked at both of those and it seems as if there isnt a css rule in either of those files for the footer. I have tried adding rules but it just changes the text around and I cant get the bg color to change. What do I need to put in there to make it work right?

Find this in their stylesheet_tm.css file and alter the red highlighted color
