How do I change the URL sub-page name to the Category name?

I have all these pages some are category pages and none of them contain the actual page name. They look like this:

http://www.getwebsitetrafficseo.com/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=78_72

and I want them to look like this:

http://www.getwebsitetrafficseo.com/linkbuildingpackages

well it does not show up right in this post, but I want "linkbuildingpackages" after the name of my domain name, as an example.

I have look at the tutorial, even did a search on here of changing a page name and I cannot find anything. I need help!

Please provide concise instructions as I am new to Zen Cart and I am still fumbling around.

Thanks.

What you are asking for is a URL rewriter. There are several mods that do this, but the best one is probably CEON's. These are complex programs, and you should get your Zen Cart functioning correctly before adding the extra complication to it.

Re: How do I change the URL sub-page name to the Category name?

I don't understand why the page name does not come out correct when it is created to start with. I have worked on several other website programs and ecommerce sites and you could always either make the url what you wanted it to be or change it you wanted easily. I don't want to get my pages indexed when the url page names are like this and are definitely not helping with seo efforts to have some page name with a bunch of numbers and stuff in it.

How do I get to this CEON thing and why doesn't zen cart just let you have the page names you want? I am sorry but this does not make any sense to me and I am worried about not being able to promote the urls with all that stuff at the end of the domain name.

Can you help me?
thanks

Re: How do I change the URL sub-page name to the Category name?

Search for CEON and Conor Kerr (the author) to find out more. I don't know anything useful about installing URL rewriters.

When Zen Cart was first developed, there were no good automatic URL rewriters, and less than perfect is very bad. There have been several mods developed to work with Zen Cart in recent years; I wouldn't be surprised to see the CEON mod or something very much like it integrated into v2.0 when it comes out.
"Human-friendly" URLs are of varying importance depending on the market. People don't usually type in a whole product URL no matter how friendly it may be; they go to the site and search. If your products are more like articles, readable names may be more important.

Re: How do I change the URL sub-page name to the Category name?

Thanks for your help Glenn. I found the CEON online and it looks like a free download, whether I will be able to use it remains to be seen. I am not a programmer so I am hoping it is simple to use. It doesn't sound difficult, but so far, everything I have tried to do with Zen Cart has been a bit difficult. You mentioned I should "get your Zen Cart functioning correctly before adding the extra complication to it" ... is my zen cart not functioning properly right now?

I am still very new to Zen Cart as you can tell. It is very important to me to have user-friendly url page names because I will be promoting them by page name at certain times. In fact, it is very important for SEO purposes that the url name is user friendly keyword name. So, if you think my cart is not functioning properly please let me know.

Again, thanks for your help.

I didn't look at your site before that reply, but based it on your statement that you were very new to Zen Cart. It seems to be fully set up already, so you could apply the rewriter without worrying about a mess in early organizational stages.

There is a good support thread for CEON's mod here.

Re: How do I change the URL sub-page name to the Category name?

My understanding of that is that it automatically appends category/product numbers to the generated text of the URL. Never used it so don't have authoritative information...
