Can Zen Cart be added to an existing website?

I am considering Zen Cart for a client, however I can't find any documentation about installing Zen Cart to an existing website? Can this be integrated into a custom site, or must the site be built with Zen Cart? Thank you.

Generally, it's better to build the site in Zencart, or install Zencart in a subdirectory of the main site and style it to look the same.

Zencart can't really be used as a 'back-end' cart script or as a component like in the carts available for Joomla.
