Using spanish_language_pack... only the English product-description is saved?

Using (spanish_language_pack_utf_1-4) and the latest zencart...

And using the admin in English, I enter a product name and description in English and Spanish, go to preview, everything looks good. I hit update and only the English is saved.

This must be a simple problem as I can not find anything in the forum.

Please, can someone tell me what I should try?

Thanks

Alvin

Re: Using spanish_language_pack... only the English product-description is saved?

Hello torvista

Thanks for the response....

I looked over the tables and they all look fine:
products_description.language_id has only entry for english (1)

categories_description.language_id has both entries per language for categories_id (2, spanish 1, english) nothing missing in categories_name, only thing is I did not enter anything in categories_description for ether language (if that matters).

In this case what do you think I should try?

That is not fine, If there is no field for the spanish description, then it cannot be saved, exactly your problem.

Why it is missing is something someone else will have to explain.

If you create a new product, can you save in both languages?

Good point.

All my products are imported from an erp system.

I just entered a test product and it went in just fine, shows in both languages. No problem.

All my products are imported in English, and then I go edit and add the Spanish Products Name: and Products Description:, (that was the plan anyway) but when I hit the update button it drops the Spanish.

With these tests it shows that a product imported only has one row in products_description table, but products entered through admin have two rows entered, even if you do not enter any Spanish info...

So looks like what I need is to get that extra row entered in the products_description table.

Is this the only table where this happens?

Please let me know,

Thanks

I don't know.

When I want to know what happens in the db when I do something, I export the db to a sql file, then do the change, export again, then compare the two exports with Beyond Compare to see the differences.

What erp are you importing from?

What erp are you importing from?
Phreedom release candidate three phreesoft.com

And I did the text diff on the two sql files, looks like that is the only table that gets the multiple row entries for multi language...

I will now look at getting the import script modified.

Thanks for the help

Re: Using spanish_language_pack... only the English product-description is saved?

Your problem is caused by your import process.
If you were to use the Zen Cart admin screens to enter your products, you wouldn't have that problem.

You'll need to make sure that a record is created in the products_description table for EACH language anytime you import products from an external source. Otherwise the admin pages won't have anything to update, and thus the changes won't be saved.

Re: Using spanish_language_pack... only the English product-description is saved?

Hi. I initially imported all products into my site with Easy Populate Advanced, once I read that it would import both Spanish and English descriptions and data. Everything seemed to import nicely. The Spanish descriptions were all readable and correct on the website, which was in UTF-8.

However, although the product particulars did appear in Admin, the description would have only a few words, if any.

I am at a point where I am updating descriptions in products and categories. I just tried to update a product description in Spanish, and it did update correctly, except that it continues to not show the UTF-8 accented characters correctly and behaves like it is reading them in ANSI in Admin. However, the accents are displayed correctly on the site.

When I copy the updated description translation into the Spanish description window for categories, all but the first few words will disappear from the Spanish description window when the category description is saved, and the description which was previously fine on the Spanish version of the site will then only consist of the stray text remaining in the Admin Spanish description window.

I believe at one point if I saved the admin product screen, everything would need to be re-entered to see the product details in the product description, but this is no longer occurring based on my one test today.

The workaround is to go to the MySQL database and copy the translation directly into the database table entitled categories_description.

The real description will then show up in the admin screen, but with non-UTF-8 collation characters; for example: eléctrico. However, the description showing in the website will contain the correct rendition of the Spanish accents.

If someone needs the steps to make the changes in the MySQL database, I will be happy to post them.

Maybe someone knows what I have forgotten to change to make the accented characters appear correctly in the Admin description screens.
