Banner Images stopped working

Hi - I have been running banner images in both the header and banner box all for more then 12 months but now have realised they just stopped working - probably in the last 2 weeks or so. Well it must have been something I did but I am not sure what. Have trawled through all the standard wiki and threads but still no luck. Have tried making new banners etc without luck

In my layout settings I have

Banner Display Groups - Header Position 1
Banner Display Groups - Header Position 2
Banner Display Groups - Header Position 3 Wide-Banners
Banner Display Groups - Footer Position 1
Banner Display Groups - Footer Position 2
Banner Display Groups - Footer Position 3
Banner Display Groups - Side Box banner_box SideBox-Banners
Banner Display Groups - Side Box banner_box2 SideBox-Banners
Banner Display Group - Side Box banner_box_all BannersAll

I have the existing banner which use this config. As a test I set them as HTML text only and they work. But as an image only they wont come up anymore.....they aren't referenced in the HTML code.

all the images are in /images/banners/ and I reset the directory and images to 777 (well it would only let me do 677 in fact)

I recently turned off "specials for the month of ..." but went back and re-enabled them.

The files on the server for tpl_banner_box_all and banner_box_all have a modified date stamp of 12 months ago and I checked those against an old copy I have.

Have tried 3 different browsers at home and work so I don't think its a Norton et al issue blocking these.

I don't know where else to look.
