categories side box question

This applies to my local install only at present.

I figured out a way to add my product shipping codes to my tab delimited spreadsheet imported with easy populate but as a result I now have single characters shipping codes visible in the categories side box.

How can I block/prevent those characters from being displayed?

Where in the categories sidebox are these codes appearing? A screenshot might help. Do they also appear in the categories-tabs in the header, if you enable that?
What did you do with EP to get the codes imported? This is critical information, as it probably cannot be fixed without knowing this.
