blank pages when adding items to cart or anything got to do with checkout

My website is having problems with adding items to cart. It is showing a black page when anything is added to the shopping cart or during checkout. The website was running fine for a year until recently. any help would be great. Also, I'm wondering if upgrading the site to the lasted version will fix it?

And, yes, upgrading would be a good idea, especially if your host has recently upgraded their PHP version to one that ZC v1.3.8 was never designed for.
