Switching templates, side boxes don't appear

Hello - I'm using 1.3.9h on a brand new local instance. I'm messing around with templates. I made some changes to the classic custom template. I wanted to create a second template to play around with, so I copied the classic directory under templates and renamed the new directory "modern". I edited the template_info.php file and provided some new information.

I can now choose the new "modern" template from the admin area. I did a test by changing the background color in the "modern/css" stylesheet. I can refresh my page and see that the background color is different between the templates. BUT, I lost all of the sideboxes on the left (Categories, Reviews, Information) and the ones on the right (Search, Languages, etc)

I looked in some other directories, and where there was a classic folder, I copied it and renamed the new folder "modern".

I'm pretty sure there is something small I'm missing, but unfortunately can't pinpoint it. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Something small like clicking "reset" at the bottom of Tools > Layout Boxes Controller? :)

Thank you very much. I was not aware that the Layout Box Control was template specific. I looked through the FAQ's and Tutorials, but didn't find anything specific.
