Do I need cardinal?

I am using 1.39h, I have paypal pro but have no idea what cardinal is.

Do i need it? payments seem to be going through OK but i get a warning message

There are 3 steps to configuring your Cardinal 3D-Secure service properly:
1-Login to the Cardinal Merchant Admin URL supplied in your welcome package
(NOT the test URL), and accept the license agreement.
2-Set a transaction password.
3-Copy your Cardinal Merchant ID and Cardinal Transaction Password into your
ZC PayPal module.

Make sure that your values in the admin - payment module setup have been entered and are correct

The problem is I have paypal pro but i have no idea what cardinal is?

OK so if I disable paypal pro and just use express checkout will i still need cardinal?
