Changes to home page meta description and meta keywords from admin area?

Hi there
Could anyone please help me, a complete novice store owner, to change meta details on my home page and other main pages. I know how to do this for categories/products using the black and white icon , but cannot work out how to do this for the home page etc?

If you would kindly reply with an idiot proof, slow explanation, that would be most helpful.

edit the following language file:

includes/languages/english/YOUR_TEMPLATE/meta_tags.php

Is that in the admin area?I can see a sub-heading called "language" under "localization"in the top bar in "admin", but it doesn't seem to have anything about meta tags.

No, the language file(s) are in the front end section of your site.

includes/languages/english/

You'll need to edit these files using a text editor.
