changed single-product category to multiple, can't delete link

Hi. I had a single-product category, and added 4 products. One of the products then established a link to the master category as well as being in it.

When I went to the multiple categories manager at the bottom of the c (copy) menu, I could not find a way to unlink the category.

Using the c (copy) command, and the multiple categories link manager at the bottom of the c screen, I reset the category.

Then, the product showed up not only within the category but as a top category single product. As it wasn't the first product, I erroneously pressed x to delete it.

I then had only 4 products instead of 5, and re-uploaded the 5 products.

It came back as one of the 5 products in the 5-product category plus its old location as a single-product category; but this time, it was the only product which had access to the copy command for getting to the multiple products management screen.

I suppose if I delete all 5 products and start over, this will happen again.

It does tell me that I should change the top category to "off" but I cannot see how to do that.

For some reason, the product picture no longer shows on the website, although the correct picture did show up previously. Otherwise, the product shows up in the website.

How may I get rid of the one-product category and thereby get all 5 products back into the category with no link?

I tried to move it to a new category with the "m" command but nothing happened.

Ooops. Now this stray product/category is coming up as my home page!

I'm afraid to delete as it came back a worse error when I deleted the product previously.

I decided to follow some instructions on this site to create a new category, move the products, and delete the old category.

However, instead of the option to create a new category on the categories page, it now has the option to create a new product on that page.

I thought I was being super careful and perfected the upload on my WAMP server which was a duplicate of the online server. It worked on the WAMP but resulted in the above problems on the online server.

I'm still trying to get back my index page when the site loads, so this is not really a minor problem. Maybe I need to go into the SQL database and remove products and product numbers, but I can't be sure that would do it. I could just restore the site to the backup, delete the product in the single-product category, rename the category and start fresh.

If there is another way, any ideas would be appreciated.

Hopefully I am on the right track. I decided to delete all 5 products within the cart, plus the product showing as the top category. Therefore, I found when I pressed the delete key that it identifies the categories and there is a checkbox in front of each category. I checked "top" and it deleted the stray product-category.

The "new category" button has reappeared in the category menu.

I will delete the final product and reload. If that doesn't work, I will restore from the backup, I guess.

Having the categories appear to select one to delete is a wonderful option. I am glad to say I am now aware of it. I had read about it but didn't observe it somehow, previously.

My site is now back to normal. Moral: try the delete key first and don't worry, if you go slowly, you should see the option to delete one or the other category if you are in this type of situation.

Thanks for this I was struggling, I found the 'link catagories' which is great cos it stopped me having to duplicate things for my site to show a catagory of 'in stock items' but then they sold I was cluless, searching the screens for a button that said, delete link heh heh!

Easy when you know how, so thanks for showing me how :clap:
