There is a random checkbox in the cart place... What is it for? And can I remove it?

if you just click the X then it deletes the item anyway?

You can check the boxes , and click one of the x which will remove multiple products. To disable the check-box, go to your admin
configuration => Stock => Show Shopping Cart - Delete Check-boxes or Delete Button and set to 1
