Categories and products after upgrade

I am upgrading http://wholesaleforms.com from 1.3.7 to 1.3.9h and things aren't going well. Part of the problem is that I did not do the original installation and there are add-ons and edits that I did not do and an over ride system was not used until I came on board.

I decided to take a different route and see what happens. I followed the instructions on upgrading which included creating a demo folder and doing a fresh install there. that worked great, where as the /new_store install didn't work so well after I had edited so many files.

So, I went into the demo install and entered all of my over ride files and it looks great, (http://wholesaleforms.com/demo) except that there are no categories or menus. I need those things obviously and since there are so far no errors, I thought I could just use that install.

1. is there a problem with doing it that way? (I know that I will have to re-install ad-ons, but I was going to have to do that anyway)

2. how do I get my products and menus back? what did I not move over that would include those configurations?

To get your products and categories you need to import a copy of your live database into the testing area's database.
