Reducing Balance Discount Coupon

Is it possible to configure a discount coupon to have a reducing balance?

For example:

Rather than offer a refund, offer the customer a coupon for the same amount - which can be redeemed against the next purchase. If the value of the next purchase is less than the value of the coupon, the order total becomes zero and checkout completes immediately.

However, is it possible for the balance of the transaction (discount coupon value less purchase value) to be reflected in the coupon so that the residual/unused balance can still be used?

If I were to allow multiple uses of the coupon a customer could quite easily and repetetively redeem the full coupon value each time which is not what I want.

Some vendors use gift vouchers (rather than coupons) for this very purpose.

Yes, I'd had that thought too but my site isn't really suited to gift vouchers (stock photo sales) so I have disabled that feature.

I think the easiest option is to communicate with the buyer and ask them if they want a voucher against their next (correct) purchase or a refund, the latter giving the buyer greater flexibilty.
