Is there a way of taking Pre-Order downpayments?

I have searched but haven't found an exact solution for doing this.
Here is what I am trying to do:

I have certain products listed as being available only after a certain date, and I have Zen Cart set to allow them to be pre-ordered as "Special Order" items (I also have the "Product Special Order" module installed). Some items are rather expensive, so instead of having a person pay the full amount (plus shipping) for these items, I would like to give them the option to pay only a down payment with the full amount (and shipping) to only be billed when the product arrives.

I'm using PayPal Website Payments Pro. PayPal suggested using their Recurring Payments method, but I'm not certain how to do that from within Zen Cart - and only for those particular products.

Has anyone else done something similar to this? Is there a module out there for this that I just haven't found yet? Maybe a suggestion to an alternative way of dealing for "Pre-Order" items?

The Installment Plan module looks promising, but does is work on a per-product basis? It sounds like it's for an entire order. It's only pre-order items that won't ship for a while that we want to take down payments for - anything else needs to be fully paid for.
