main page multiple categories

Is it possible to have the main page open with multiple categories?

I've set Configuration -> Layout Settings -> Categories - Always Show on Main Page to 1 and "Main Page - Opens with Category" to one category ID, but I'd like to get 3 categories to show on the main page. Can this be done?

No, that's not what I'm looking for, but thank you.

Let's say I have 3 categories (Dogs, Cats, Birds). If I set the settings as I described in my first post, I can select only one of the 3 categories and have all products under Dogs listed on my main page. But, I would like to list all products from 3 categories, not just one. I hope I'm making sense here...
