Customizing Order Page with a "Where did you hear about us?" drop down

Hi -
I attempted to add a drop down menu to the check out page with which the customer selects where they heard about the shop. If a customer log in and goes through the check out process all the info is there. But the data isn't showing up on the order. My guess is that in my simplistic understanding of how to do this I 'overwrote' the comments field or something...
I added the file to mytemplate>templates>tpl_checout_shipping_default.php
and added in this code:

<legend>How did you hear about us?</legend> <select name="comments"> <option>Choose from below:</option> <option>Friend</option> <option>Hooping.org</option> <option>Hoopcity.ca</option> <option>Facebook</option> <option>Other</option> </select> <legend>If other please type in below.</legend> <?php echo zen_draw_textarea_field('comments', '45', '1'); ?> <legend>Thank You!</legend> </fieldset> directly above this code: <fieldset class="shipping" id="comments"> <legend><?php echo TABLE_HEADING_COMMENTS; ?></legend> <?php echo zen_draw_textarea_field('comments', '45', '3'); ?> </fieldset>

Like I said it shows up find on the shipping page, but no info comes through. Is there an easy-ish way to fix this?

The other issue (not major, but sort of not helpful either) is that with this system only users that are logged in and go through the cart system get this, people that use paypal express miss it entirely. Does anyone have a better and or working solution to this?

The site is hoopclothes dot com zencart 1.3.9d (yes i know i need to upgrade).

Ok, but instead of using the add on can I modify the code I have already edited and thereby create a different solution where the info I've collected on referrals shows up on the orders and not in the admin area?

Also it looks like the add-on solution is only viable for people creating accounts which doesn't always happen with purchase. hmm...

I have now installed the add-on. However I can't get it to record any data.
If you create an account you are forced to choose a referral source. That part works great.
But I can't find the data collected from this anywhere. I looked in Admin>Extra>Referral Sources for sources of other, but there is nothing there even when i type something in. Nor does anything appear in the customer info whether or not a pre-set choice is selected or the new customer chose other.

Any idea how to make it show up? or maybe some place I am not looking for it where it is showing up?
