Purchased buyxgetyfree mod - remove free item when remove purchased item

Hi All - Newbie here!

I successfully installed Zen Cart 1.3.9h then purchased and installed "buyXgetYfree" from Destiny Associates. I need to add code to automatically remove the free item, if a customer removes the purchased item from their cart. I also need to add the free item only once per order, no matter how many of the buyXgetYfree items are added to the cart. Destiny Associates does not respond when I try to contact them about the issue. Aparently they didn't add the code to their module, as I can't seem to locate any code that would do this in the includes/templates/template_default/templates/tpl_shopping_cart_default.php file. I am new to php coding, but can find my way around, just can't seem to put it all together to write the code yet.

My problem is that I need the proper Zen Cart php code to automatically remove the free item from the cart and make it on a per order only basis. I also need to know where to place the code and in which file to place it.

The site can be viewed in it's developement directory at the following link: Site Link

Thanks in advance for any and all help I can get on this problem!
