Multiple background images?

Hi cannot seem to figure this entirely out. Using 1.3.9 and want to have a header background image running across the site from the top at 100% width, and also at the footer of the site a similar image while the main (middle) background holds another image which is repeated. I have searched long for a solution to this, and have got some info but still not sure how to go about it. Can anyone help on the best way to do this.:lookaroun

Re: Multiple background images?

That's done in the stylesheet. Can't be more specific without more information on your site.

Try looking at the tutorials for stylesheet.

Re: Multiple background images?

thanks for getting back to me.

here is a link to my website and the css looks like this;

body {
margin: 0 15px;
font-family: verdana, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;
font-size: 70%;
color: #000000;
background:url(../images/header_bg.gif) repeat-x, url(../images/background.gif) repeat;
}

/*}

#topshadow {
height: 62px
width:1030px;
margin: -62px
background-image: url(images/header_bg.gif);
background-repeat: repeat-x;
}

#pageborders {
width:100%x;
min-height:100%;
margin:auto;
background:url(images/background.gif);
background-repeat: repeat;
}

#bottomshadow {
margin:0px;
height:66px;
width:1030px;
background:url(images/header_bg.gif);
background-repeat: repeat-x;
}*/

although this works somewhat in firefox not so in IE. I was starting to include some code in the body to get around this another way but not sure if I am on the right track. I know many websites have this look so may be I am doing something really silly as I don't seem to be able to achieve it. Hope you can help.

Re: Multiple background images?

:shocking:
Might want to take a look at 1024x768 resolution.
Not sure enough folks have bigger as yet.

Quite the contrary.

Re: Multiple background images?

Aren't statistics great? These you point to are for people accessing w3c.schools. That's like saying the number of accidents involving senior citizens has tripled in the last 10 years. But, the number of seniors has quintupled with the baby boomers, so statistics lie again.:P

From the website you quoted> Statistics are important information. W3Schools.com is for people with an interest for web technologies. This fact indicates that the figures below might not be 100% true for the average internet users. The average internet-user might have a lower screen resolution.MIGHT?
I'm gonna need more proof before I plan for more than 1024 x 768.
Most of us are still using the 960 Grid System.

Re: Multiple background images?

Also, if you look at w3cschools browser statistics, 42% of folks are using firefox.

Hi dbltoe and dgent
you know still confused as to the whole resolution thing anyway and what exactly happens, I am obviously missing something here but please tell me the problem - are you referring to older versions of certain browsers if so please tell me which ones and how it effects background images that are stretched?

Re: Multiple background images?

It's always a good idea to check out any site you're developing using a tool such as this one from Google Labs. That way you can decide where to put your most important information and can see how people with smaller screens/browser windows will see your site. No need to believe statistics. You just need to put your most important info up where people can easily see it. And be sure to check out different pages on your site, not just the home page.

Thanks for that advice and for clarifying things for me. I suppose my site template could be considered a little too wide in that case but when i view other sites they appear in the same co-ordinates. also when i minimize the browser the site minimizes accordingly. I know what you are saying about page placement though. the site is still under construction but I would appreciate you having a look, link is here if you get a chance because I have to say I am still a little vague as to an issue with this but this is my first site so probably just hasn't dawned yet!!

Hi Orkid, not sure if this is what you are looking for, couldn't find initially where I found the stretch background but here is the link now.

Im not disputing using 1024x768 as a basis webpage design, just your point that 'I don't think many people are running more than 1024x786".....

I can't think of a laptop made in the last 7 years that runs 1024x768 as a max resolution. Every comp running Vista is most likely to be running more, and Windows 7.

1024x768 will be the minority now, just as W3C says. Do you think they plucked those stats out of thin air? My own stats on my own sites give the same data.
