Gift Certificate / PayPal Invoice issue

Hi All,

I have been testing the functionality of my Zen Cart installation and I noticed the following issue;

If a customer pays for goods with a combination of Gift Certificates and PayPal (Standard), the order confirmation email shows totals as show below (also true if printing an invoice);

If the order is paid entirely with Gift Certificates or PayPal, the format is correct.

Has anyone else seen this issue?

Have a happy July 4th.

Ken.

Re: Gift Certificate / PayPal Invoice issue

Does that problem still manifest using the default Classic template and no SSU module?

Please do not PM for support issues: a private solution doesn't benefit the community.

Be careful with unsolicited advice via email or PM - Make sure the person you are talking to is a reliable source.

Hi Kim,

Apologies for the delay in replying, it took me a while to set up the test.

Yes, the error still occurs.

Regards,
Ken.

Re: Gift Certificate / PayPal Invoice issue

Help me recreate your exact scenario. Assume I'm starting with a brand new clean uncustomized install of v1.3.9h without any addons or payment modules or gift certificates.
What exact steps do I need to take to recreate your problem? Including what steps you've taken to create the gift cert, to set up the payment module, any store settings, shipping settings, any other module or admin settings, tax settings ... everything.

Hi DrByte,

Thanks for the reply.

I will start with the way I am able to consistently reproduce the error as this may be all that is needed. If you are not able to reproduce it, I will supply the other information you requested.

  1. Via Admin --> Gift Certificate/Coupons --> Mail Gift certificate, I sent myself a $50 (reproducible with other amounts) Gift Certificate. I had already created my "customer" account.

  2. I clicked on the link in the subsequent email and added the $50 to my account.

  3. While logged in to my account, I added an item to my cart which, with Sales Tax and Shipping, came to $50 and 10 cents.

  4. I went to Checkout and paid the extra 10 cents via PayPal (Standard).

These are the only steps necessary for me to reproduce the error. If I had paid the entire amount with a Gift Certificate or PayPal, the issue does not arise.

Hope this helps.

Regards,
Ken.

Re: Gift Certificate / PayPal Invoice issue

I have a clean v1.3.9h install set up (no addons/customizations), with demo products and all default payment/shipping/order-total modules enabled as per the demo product installation.
I've also enabled PayPal Website Payments Standard.
You said you had taxes configured, so I added a sample tax rate as well.
I sent myself a $50 gift certificate.
I added 10 units of Sample of Product General, selected USPS shipping, and paypal. Checkout completed normally.

Qty. Products Total
10 ea. Sample of Product General Type $39.50

$39.50 Sub-Total
$6.85 United States Postal Service (1 x 13.00lbs) (Library)
$5.04 CA TAX 12.75%
-$50.00 Gift Certificates

$1.39 Total

Thanks for your feedback and effort Doc, it is very much appreciated.

I will be looking in to this issue with some depth as soon as I can make the time. Meanwhile, I did notice that when I pay for an order solely with Gift Certificates, the payment method shown on the "customers" email under the heading Billing Address, is PayPal.

I wonder if this provides a clue?

Have a great weekend all.
Ken.

Re: Gift Certificate / PayPal Invoice issue

More info.

Lots of research on this issue today. Discovered the following:

  1. The original issue occurs whenever PayPal (Standard) is chosen as the payment option. it occurs regardless of whether the payment is from a Credit Card or a PayPal account. I have no other payment options open to me at the moment.

  2. I checked the Zen Cart DB and found where the totals are stored (orders_total table) and discovered that the totals were not being written to the DB.

I will look in to this more tomorrow. If anyone has any ideas in the meantime, all suggestions are welcome.

Thanks All.
Ken.

Re: Gift Certificate / PayPal Invoice issue

Is there a very specific reason why you're using PayPal Standard instead of the more reliable PayPal Express Checkout?

Yes there is ... I had no idea that the Express option was more reliable .

I changed to the Express version and every single problem described above was resolved.

I guess the moral is; Newbies, don't use PayPal Standard.

Thank you DrByte and Kim for your help, it has been greatly appreciated.

Regards,
Ken.
