featured products on main home page

I had someone else build and customize my zen cart. My homepage comes from tpl_main_page.php. How can i get the featured products to list on my main page? So i can edit the details such as number of items per row or dispaly image, display model, etc. all from the admin?

because right now, turning on featured products or new products from the admin does nothing.

i am no coder, but i believe i am missing the code for showing featured products in tpl_main_page.php. Could anyone provide that?

this code seems to get only 9 featured products on the main page, but i dont think its right since i cant turn it on and off from the admin...
