How do I use PayPal to accept credit cards?

I see that there are several options with PayPal including:

  • PayPal Express Checkout
  • PayPal PayFlow Gateway
  • PayPal Website Payments Standard
  • PayPal Website Payments Pro

My ZenCart Payment Modules show

  • PayPal IPN - Website Payments Standard (which I'm using)
  • PayPal Website Payments Pro
  • PayPal Express Checkout

Does anyone have a preference? I am wanting to set up to accept credit cards automatically instead of manually (which I have been doing with ProPay). I don't want to pay more than I have to since my sales are still low. I also don't always like to show off the PayPal information because not everyone trusts Paypal.

PayPal says the Express Checkout is free with an existing business account. Cool. Anyone have issues with that one? Is that the one with the split screen that allows customers to enter their credit card on the left or their PayPal information on the right?

I am not finding information on PayPal Website Payments Pro on PayPal's website. Is anyone using this? Can you tell me more or direct me to some information on that option?

Thanks!
Christy

Re: How do I use PayPal to accept credit cards?

I see that PayPal's Website Payments Pro requires a developer for "Custom Integration." https://merchant.paypal.com/us/cgi-bin/?cmd=_render-content&content_ID=merchant/compare_wp_products#secondpage

Does anyone know what the developer needs to do? Will an SSL be required? Is it horribly difficult to set up in the cart or just a matter of filling in the mod's blanks?

Thanks,
Christy

You don't need a developer for Payments Pro - it's built in to Zencart. It's a regular merchant account processor, though, and is more expensive for a low volume site as it requires a monthly fee regardless of volume.

I suggest Paypal Express for new sites and sites that don't do a lot of business. There's nothing you can do about visitors who have an irrational (IMO) dislike of Paypal. Paypal has done some things that haven't endeared it to sellers, but I don't know of any real reason for not liking it from the buyer's point of view.
