Need additional categories in the sidebar that do not appear in the main nav

Looking for a way to have additional categories in the sidebar that do not appear in the main nav category list. Please pardon me if this has already been asked, I have not been able to find it.

Here is the question from tutorials:

I would like to create a new sidebox that displays "categories" that I don't want to show up in the normal categories box.

For example, I sell things to owners of dogs. In the regular categories box I have created a list of breeds. In my new box I would like to have product type list such as "pillows", "afghans", "mats" etc. I already have these in my database but they all show up mixed in with the breeds.

This is an excellent question to be posted in the community support forum in order for various folks to offer different strategies for addressing this situation.

I am running a fresh install (not upgrade) of version 1.3.9 with a custom theme and no addons.

Lastly , if at all possible I would like to have the same category linked from different anchor text in the main nav and the side bar. For example, I have "Catering" listed in the main nav, and I would like it to read "Catering Equipment and Supplies" in the sidebar and have both link to the same category page.

Thank you in advance for any help.
