How do I add product attributes to existing products?

My previous web developer left our company and now we need to make changes to a client's database, I'm not sure on the best way to do it. What I need is to add product attributes such origin, maker, condition, year of manufacture etc. Currently we are using the product text option, so we need to type out all the time. What is the right way taking into account that the databse already as 300 items.

The way you are doing this right now is actually the better way, because it makes all the attributes (or characteristics) easily searchable. Also, it is good for SEO, because these characteristics are embedded into the description text.

If you want a system that has separate INPUT FIELDS for each characteristic, then a lot of code work will need to be done, as well as additional fields added to the database.

Then, if you want site visitors to be able to search these data-sets, you will need to modify the search functions.

It can be done, but it is detailed and challenging.

There are modules available for ADDING fields to products. NUMINIX has such a module at their site. There are others in the free add-ons.

can it be that difficult to add product options attributes, the search function is not inportant for this. Every product on the database has these 'value options' . What do you suggest then?
