Different Horizontal/Vertical Categories - Suggestions?

Using v1.39h in a new Zen setup. We happen to be using a template that provides both categories across the top as well as down the left side. The site owner wants to use a different set of categories in both places. The set across the top would be use based categories (eg Camping, Boating, etc) and the categories along the left would be product based categories (eg Tents, cookware, etc).

I'm looking for guidance on the best approach to implementing this. One option I considered is hidden categories for the use based (camping, boating, etc). Configure Zen to not show the categories across the top and hard code the links for the use based categories.

Any suggestions, alternatives, guidance, etc is appreciated!

To expand on what kobra said, you could use the EZ page header function and have the EZ pages link to the category pages.
