I am using zencart 1.3.9h and when i click a category in the sidebar the main page shows the category logo but does not show the sub category icons. I cannot work out how to switch them back on.

A URL to your site will help us help you. It may be a template problem.
In the meantime, check your setting in Admin - Configuration - Layout Settings - Categories - Always Open to Show SubCategories

I dont think its a template issue as they were there before.

Sorry, wrong admin option. How about Admin - Configuration - Product Listing - Show SubCategories on Main Page while navigating ?
If that doesn't fix it, try switching temporarily to the Classic template.

Your a star thats the option. Must find a book about zen cart. Need to learn all about the options.
