Fly Out Menu Recommendations?

Hey guys. I think I've finally decided that it's past time that I add some sort of flyout menu feature to my site. I like the site below, which is not a zen site, that allows you to hover over the menu and easily see the subcategories. I've looked at a couple different mods but I was hoping I could get a suggestion or two concerning which is best? Whatcha think?

Hey Steve, can I please get a link to your site so I can see what this menu looks like after your install?

Um, no. It isn't up yet. If you PM me your IP address, I'll add it to the Maintenance list so you can see it for a while.

Re: Fly Out Menu Recommendations?

So can that program fly out past the first layer of category depth to the second and third layer?

Re: Fly Out Menu Recommendations?

I don't really like fly-outs with multiple levels - you have to think about people using phones now, and it just makes things difficult to navigate. One level is fine though.

I agree. One flyout level is fine - any more than that, it gets confusing and messy on the small screens. You can have multiple levels, though. The stock mod supports six.

Re: Fly Out Menu Recommendations?

Another thing many people forget about with flyout with a phone, is because they are 'touch to activate' the flyout, instead of hover over with a computer, is they have the root of the menu as a working link so on a phone it takes you straight to a page before you can look down the menu and select the actual option you wanted. The root of the menu needs to be a dead link and go nowhere, and only navigate from the options in the menu.

Re: Fly Out Menu Recommendations?

If you want the features that Categories Dressing can provide, that can easily be turned into a flyout menu by adding a few CSS rules given in its support thread (post 1750).

Glen, would you have an example link to that mod?

I can't think of one offhand. There may be an example posted in the support thread somewhere... It works like any other CSS flyout, aside from individual styling details.

I can't help but notice that you also use those little triangle pieces in your menu. Is that something that's standard with the mod?

You can look at nybikergear.com (click any top category for full menu) as one example of Categories Dressing in flyout mode.

I really like that but would that force me to list all my 1st subcategories as was done on that site? If so my menu would be 10 feet tall.

The mod comes with a set of them in various colors.

Glen, I went to install your mod to my site https://www.examplecart.com to test it out before going live onto my real site https://www.redlinestands.com and it appears that my test site has lost its stylesheet somehow. I haven't used the site for anything in months and all of the sudden everything is whipped clean. Does this look like a missing stylesheet to you?

Re: Fly Out Menu Recommendations?

Yes, that's what it looks like. Your stylesheets appear to be minified - perhaps something is wrong with that?
Your view source is totally blank, and the View CSS shows after the minify heading
Cannot change zlib.output_compression - headers already sent in <b>/home/examplec/public_html/catalog/min/config.php
so I would look there for the problem.

A PHP file has output some HTML before the proper head info was output.

Oh dear, you lost me Glen. That was just total Spanish to me. I'm sorry. Can you please speak with a lesser technical level?
