Adding new sub category to existiing category

Hi all,
I have a number of categories, some with sub-categories. I have a sub-category that currently now contains a large number of products. I would like to be able to add some new sub-categories to the existing sub-category but cannot see how to do it.

Here is an example of what I would like to achieve:

Current = master category>sub-category>products
Wish = master category>sub-category>sub-sub category1>products

I have tried editing the sub-category to "Add with sub-categories", but it will not let me create a sub-category presumably because there are products within this?

Is there a way (without deleting all of the products from the subcategory) to add in another layer?

No. You can have products or subcategories in a category, but not both.

You will have to MOVE the products out of a category before you can add sub-categories.

You can either do this manually by using the MOVE function (the little M icon on the product listin in admin), or you can do it using Easy Populate, where you do a dump of all your product data, then, in the spreadsheet, put in the relevant category tree relating to those products.

The EP way is a little detailed, in that you first have to DELETE the products before you can assign them to a new category.

You can use EP to DELETE (v_status = 9) but you must remeber to BACK UP your images folder because v_status=9 will ALSO delete the products' images.
