Remove random from Featured Product sidebox

I have searched high and low and can't find anything that tells me how I can change the sorting of the featured products side box. I've tried a few things myself but can't figure it out.

I would like to sort by the date the product was added to the catalog.

I would like to remove the random sorting of the Newly added product display. I would like to sort it by the date the product was added to the site.
