affiliate program to generate traffic and sales?

I'm thinking joining an affiliate program to generate traffic and sales to my site. There seems to be several programs out there and even a zencart module.

Are such programs worth the effort, and if so, could you please recommend one by private message?

Before installing, I was also interested in hearing whether affliliate programs in general actually work and whether it's a good investment, in terms of time spent installing and running one. Has anyone any advice, or share some experience?

There are too many variables to give general answers to your questions. The success of an affiliate program will depend on what products you have, what the commission structure is, who the affiliate is, etc., etc.

To narrow it down, we're dealing in arts and handicrafts from South-East Asia. Our competitors commision structure range from 6 to 10%. We've got a large affiliate in mind, which happens to be our main competitor's affiliate - so perhaps not a good idea to use the same. Do you have more advice to offer?
