Max Items in Cart

Can anyone point me to where I can set the max number of items that can be added to a cart?

Do you want the maximum number of individual products or the total of all items?

max total of all items would be fine.

That is not something you can set in stock Zen Cart; you can set maximums for any one product in Catalog > Categories/Products > edit product.

You would have to do some custom coding for what you want.

You might look at the Free Add On for Minimum Items and see if you can reverse the logic to make it a Maximum Items ...

Thank you, Linda McGrath. I spent all day in the Saturday salt mines today and was getting frustrated. This ^ was exactly what I needed. I had to register to pass on how useful your advice from four years ago was for the unique situation my boss put me in today.

None of my business really, and I don't have an answer, but I can't help but wonder why you would need this?

I'm guessing that it is to stop abuse by some robots that don't know when to stop? If so, perhaps it may be easier to simply disallow those particular bots?

In my own case, it was a one-off thing to temporarily require purchases from a specific category to total exactly 6 items. They could be the same item or a mix of items, but the total had to be 6 for that category. The suggestion to tweak Minimum Items was just what I needed. Wish I had thought of it myself. To make matters worse, the total for that category had to be $96, regardless of the individual prices, which were all different, and to show the savings in the cart. Everything worked out, though, and this thread got me pointed in the right direction for the first part of the problem.
