Make an attribute optional

We have a product that has an option to be engraved with 100 characters (and a box to enter the text) and another box to add an additional 100 characters, if you want them and a box to fill in.

We cannot seem to make the second box optional - How is this done

Any answers are much appreciated

In Catalog > Attributes Controller, for the desired product, edit the text attribute and ensure that the red box labeled "Attribute Required for Text:" is set to no.
