How important is SMTP? Can't get it to work with google apps and GoDaddy

Using v.1.3.9
No add ons
Just installed, not yet implemented

  1. How important is SMTP for my site's security? Is it really worth all the time I'm spending to make this work?

  2. I have followed the instructions in the Wiki but, I still get the following error when I try to send using SMTPAUTH:
    Email Error: SMTP Error: Could not connect to SMTP host.

I am hosting with GoDaddy and have spoken to their support, but I still don't see what that has to do with anything. Please advise.

I know that for their eMail setup for SMTP they use port 80 instead of port 25. Could that be the source of the issue?
