Can I use select an attribute by clicking a checkbox in a sidebox?

I would like my visitors to select which product to be shown by selecting relevant product attributes. The attributes must be selected by clicking checkboxes that are located in a sidebox.

An example can be that my products can have the colours red, blue or green. My sidebox should then show three checkboxes:

Red
Blue
Green

The visitor selects a colour and is then presented for products in that colour.

I have tried the module: Product Filter by Attribute and price range ( http://www.zen-cart.com/index.php?main_page=product_contrib_info&products_id=760 ). It basically does what I need, BUT it shows the attributes as a drop down menu and not as checkboxes.

I would like to ask if someone has a concrete solution to me question or if someone perhaps can guide me in the right direction. I kinda feel I am walking down the wrong path here.

If the visitor is to select one color and be taken to the results, you would not want checkboxes but radiobuttons. Changing the mod code from dropdown to radiobutton should not be too hard for someone with experience using both.
