My store is suddenly making IE crash repeatedly!

Hello, I've never had a problem with my store, but yesterday and today, as soon as I go to my site, Internet Explorer says it has stopped working, then when it recovers it crashes again a few times, each time saying that my site caused the crash.

The only thing I have done different is that about four days ago I added the addon Links Manager. Yesterday I added a bunch of link banners on the links page, plus three banner exchanges in my footer. I'll see if I can get it to crash again to report the exact phrase, but a box popped up with something about a Runtime Error.

How can I identify exactly what is causing it to crash IE? Obviously this can't be good for business!

If after having said all this you still want to see my site, it's www dot blackorchidcouture dot com.

Thanks!

No problems here in IE8, either. Run task manager on your system and check memory usage for iexplore.exe. If it's running high, that could be causing the issue.

The best way to learn is to try stuff. But, back it up first.

Re: My store is suddenly making IE crash repeatedly!

I had a similar problem a few days ago with a couple of sites I visit frequently. Rebooting the computer fixed it.

No problems on my end. To fix your problem reboot your computer and try again.

Re: My store is suddenly making IE crash repeatedly!

Been having this problem for a month now and the number of complaints is going up since then reaching 2/day by now. The customers complain the error comes up mainly when interacting with products and/or during the checkout process.

Two things have changed since the first complaint and those would be:

I've added numinix Ajax Shopping Cart complete with Slider
I've added numinix Fast and Easy Checkout

I later removed the first and disabled the second for testing purposes but these don't seem to be causing the issue.

I couldn't replicate the problem and have tested the site on multiple machines, running multiple internet connexions and tried all Internet Explorer versions starting with IE 7.

I also tried tweaking the Privacy and Security settings and some problems appear but none crash the site...
cURL is enable, my host hasn't changed anything in their system and I have no other alternatives.

Sorry for the thread hijacking but this seems to be a related issue.

Textual error as given by customer:

We were unable to return you to ####.

Internet Explorer has stopped trying to restore this website. It appears that the website continues to have a problem.
What you can do:
Go to your home page

 Try to return to ####

Link to the site

Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: My store is suddenly making IE crash repeatedly!

Part of your problem may be the page size - 1147456 bytes - That is over 1 MEGABYTE! You need to optimize everything! The ideal page size is 100k.

Please do not PM for support issues: a private solution doesn't benefit the community.

Be careful with unsolicited advice via email or PM - Make sure the person you are talking to is a reliable source.

Re: My store is suddenly making IE crash repeatedly!

Sorry for not replying, had a ton of other stuff to fix.

@Kim - I am currently working on reducing the page size but I don't think that is the issue.

Finally found a computer on which I could replicate the problem, only had a hour of testing though so didn't write all the specs down as I was trying to get to the bottom of it.

Browser: Internet Explorer 7
OS: Windows XP

Behavior:
Upon clicking on random links and a pop-up displays a message letting me know that the tab was recovered, this happens about 3-4 times then it let's me know that it couldn't recover the tab by displaying the error page I posted above.

My problem is that there is no pattern, it happens only when opening new pages but not on specific pages and not after browsing through a certain number of pages. There seem to be no script errors and I also tested in no-scripts mode, still the problem persists. I also tried resetting all the options in internet explorer and playing around with the switches in the advanced tab.

The only logical conclusion from my point of view is that this would be a server issue although I have 1 other zen-cart store hosted by the same guys and it doesn't seem to behave like this, there is a huge difference in traffic between the two though.

I would think that if scripts are causing this I would have been able to find a pattern in the crashes but no such thing exists. Again, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: My store is suddenly making IE crash repeatedly!

I can't create that problem in IE7 on XP.

Just a suggestion, but I wouldn't worry about it. You have at least one other problem that needs to be addressed on your site that is more important than an occassional crash on a OS/browser combo that fewer and fewer potential customers will be using.

Your Add to Cart button on your product info pages jumps around on hover in all browsers.

Re: My store is suddenly making IE crash repeatedly!

@stevesh:

Thank you for the quick reply, unfortunatly we get at least a call/day with complaints in regards to this problem. Also analytics data indicates that 5% of visitors are using this combo (this means 25/day) which without a doubt is causing us to lose potential customers.

Also thank you for pointing out the button problem. Unfortunatly I can't replicate the problem and neither did we get any complaints about this behavior but I will most certainly look into it.

Just to be sure I understand correctly, when you say:

Your Add to Cart button on your product info pages jumps around on hover in all browsers.
do you mean it literally moves away from the curson while hovering over it?

Re: My store is suddenly making IE crash repeatedly!

Interesting that you aren't seeing that. I tried several products in IE7, IE8, FF8, Chrome and Safari, (all on XP) and when I mouseover the Add to Cart button, it moves up about 20 px - in fact, the whole Add to Cart box (not button) becomes 20px or so less tall.

Re: My store is suddenly making IE crash repeatedly!

Just tried roaming around your site using IE7 and no issues at all.
The only time I've seen IE blow up like you describe is when the page has an embeded video and Websense is installed.

Websense (which is software that blocks certain types of website and content) blocks the video, IE really doesn't like that and immediately crashes.

Sorry I can't be of more help!

Re: My store is suddenly making IE crash repeatedly!

I get the Add to Cart hover bug too using IE 7.
Your Button class changes from cssButton to cssButtonHover when you mouseover the Add to Cart button, so I'm guessing you have different heights set in those classes?

Re: My store is suddenly making IE crash repeatedly!

Just noticed I get a js error on every page in IE7 too. Line 2, character 1....not much help!

If you look at the site in firefox and look at the error console on the tools menu, there are lots of errors on this page:
http://www.blackorchidcouture.com/store/alchemy/gothic-pendants

Fix them and it may solve your problem?

Re: My store is suddenly making IE crash repeatedly!

Ok I can see where the problem was, the site I am having the problem with is this one: Link here

I posted my problem here because BlackOrchidCouture was having a similar issue, this would explain why I couldn't see the cart hover issue. Please check the correct link and see if it crashes in IE now. :)

Re: My store is suddenly making IE crash repeatedly!

Well, that makes a difference. I went to that site in IE8, and when I switched to IE7 and clicked on a category link., it crashed. A hundred clicks later on various links, I can't make it happen again.

You do have some other problems with IE7: the screen has a horizontal scroll, and the images don't appear in your Specials and New Products area on the main page.

Re: My store is suddenly making IE crash repeatedly!

Yeah I can see the problem, will look into that, most likely this is caused by the absolute positioning applied to that div...
