How to install locally on a windows xp machine?

Hi Folks,

I guess there shouldn't be any problem installing a zencart locally on my laptop - as long as I set up the required environment?

Can someone kindly tell me how to start this journey? I am a new zenner but I am really amazed by zencart. It would save me lots of time if you can point some short cut for me.

Thanks.

Re: How to install locally on a windows xp machine?

To install the services that make your PC emulate a webserver, try XAMPP. Or optionally WAMPServer if XAMPP doesn't work for you.
XAMPP is way better IMO.

Then once you have that working, you can install Zen Cart on it just as any other website.

The whole process is explained in the Zen Cart Manual: https://www.zen-cart.com/book

..........Or...............you could download this absolutely wonderful tutorial FREE from the downloads section.........

Granted, it's a little old, but it still works the same..............

**How to set up a Wamp5 Server and install Zencart on your PC**

Or...............look at a more recent tutorial HERE.

The first URL is broken, the second suggestion is wonderful. Thank you.

Re: How to install locally on a windows xp machine?

If I already have IIS on my laptop/machine, can I still run Wamp server 2? Why after I successfully installed the Wamp Server2, it shows as server offline? When I tried to "Put Online", it threw out: the service is not started.

Thanks.

Re: How to install locally on a windows xp machine?

I think that as long as you don't have both of them running at the same time, they will be okay.

Yes..............you don't WANT the server to show as "online". That means you're actually serving webpages to the whole www!! It should read: "WAMPSERVER server offline".

Thank you.

I stopped IIS and restart Wamp, it seems online now; I then copied over the zencart installation which is sync with the one on bluehost, so the folder structure is: \www\ibnest....

I then tried to open it: http://localhost/ibnest/
It gives me the message:
*
Hello. Thank you for loading Zen Cart™.
You are seeing this page for one or more reasons:

This is your first time using Zen Cart™ and you haven't yet completed the normal Installation procedure.
If this is the case for you, you will need to upload the "zc_install" folder using your FTP program, and then run zc_install/index.php via your browser (or reload this page to see a link to it).

Your /includes/configure.php and/or /admin/includes/configure.php file contains invalid path information and/or invalid database-connection information..................*

I tried to open http://localhost/ibnest/zc_install/index.php, it threw 404 error, then I realized it must be the configuration file is invalid.

Looking into the configuration.php I realized I cannot use the copy which is in sync with bluehost, because server info and db info are both not the same.

So, my question is: if I want to work on my local copy and then upload the working copy to bluehost only after everything is finished, how do I do it? I believe at least server info and db info need to be changed if I do so.

Is it possible to make the same domain name works on my local machine?

If no, how do I work on my local machine?

Thank you very much for your help to a new zenner and new wamper.

Re: How to install locally on a windows xp machine?

If this is a working install cloned from bluehost, then you should have no need to re-install anything on your local machine. Just change both the config.php files to match your local configuration and you should be good. You may have to run the "Fix-Cache-Key Tool", though.

You can find more information in the FAQ's, starting HERE. Be sure to look at the "related" links, as well.

Hope this helps.

WAMP has personally been my favourite.
