adding different flavors of one product

Is it possible to add different flavors of one product? I've tried to do it via attributes and the guides but honestly I'm quite lost.

I've seen some people mention you need modifications to do it, is this true?

Basically i want a drop down box with each flavor i have in stock.

Okay I managed to figure it out, I've got the drop down box's with different flavors of the product, I know you can make the main product and list you only have for example 5 in stock, is there any way to make it do the same for the different flavors?
