Sales message goes here help request

so I can take it from the /store/includes/templates/template_default and move it to the folder that holds the copies of the folders I copied from the classic folder?

No, you copy, and paste it.

i.e.
you need to edit your footer, you copy tpl_footer.php from template_default/common, and put it in YOUR_TEMPLATE/common folder, if you don't have the folder, you create it.

What you don't find in YOUR_TEMPLATE folder, just copy it from the template_default, and edit it to your needs.

template_default has all files, and folders, you just copy the ones you need to customize, holding the same structure.

To know which files and folders are ovverridable (?) look at the zc install, where you see the classic folder, means it is overridable; actually you could copy the classic folders in each of these directories, and rename it to YOUR_TEMPLATE. Doing so you'll have also the template_info.php file which you edit to your need - all you need to change is $template_name, so that you can see it, and pick it in the admin.

Okay, then tell me did I structure it correctly when I took the file:

includes/templates/YOUR_TEMPLATE/template_info.php

and placed it in a folder includes/templates/modified/template_info.php, but also have the folders: common, css, and images in the same folder....?

Given modified is your custom folder the answer is yes.

You will have
modified <<< folder
which contains the folders
common - css - images
and the php file
template_info.php <<< file
where you edit
$template_name = 'classic';
to
$template_name = 'modified';

Re: Sales message goes here help request

Basically, the name your_template can be anything you want it to be. In forum discussions it is used as a substitute for the name of the template you use or create for your site. The fundamental point being that you should NOT do your customizations of files in the classic or template_default folders.

Let's say Joe has a bait shop, and sets up a web site called joesbaitshop.com. He creates a custom template for his site. He names his custom template joes_template. In this case, your_template and joes_template would be interchangeable for the purposes of discussing his site.

Re: Sales message goes here help request

what about the folder /store/includes/languages/modified?

Sorry if I am frustrating anyone, I was confused by what I read in the book as compared to what I am understanding here

template info.php reads this:

$template_name = 'Classic Contemporary Green';

$template_version = 'Version 1.3.5';

$template_author = 'Zen Cart Team (c) 2006';

$template_description = 'This template set is designed to be easily modified using only the style sheet to change colors, fonts, and the store logo. Three images are required; logo.jpg, header_bg.jpg, and tile_back.gif.';

$template_screenshot = 'scr_template_default.jpg';

Re: Sales message goes here help request

what about the folder /store/includes/languages/modified?

That folder would only be used to hold a customized version of english.php. The other edited language files would go in includes/languages/english/modified.

Two assumptions in the above: The language being used is English and "modified" is what you named your template.

Yes, I only have English installed, and the your_template directory is now called modified.

But, my template_info.php reads this as the system defaulted installed with the Classic Contemporary Green;

how do I handle or deal with this?

$template_name = 'Classic Contemporary Green';

$template_version = 'Version 1.3.5';

$template_author = 'Zen Cart Team (c) 2006';

$template_description = 'This template set is designed to be easily modified using only the style sheet to change colors, fonts, and the store logo. Three images are required; logo.jpg, header_bg.jpg, and tile_back.gif.';

$template_screenshot = 'scr_template_default.jpg';

Re: Sales message goes here help request

Like said in post #23 all you need is to change

$template_name = 'Classic Contemporary Green';
to
$template_name = 'modified';

However, if you like to edit the rest of it here what you can put (just an example

$template_name = 'modified';

$template_version = 'Version 1.0';

$template_author = 'TheMortician4';

$template_description = 'This template set is based on the classic green, and I have modified it, and named it modified.';

$template_screenshot = 'scr_template_default.jpg';

As per the scr_template_default.jpg, make a screenshot of your home page, or whatever image you like and name it scr_template_default.jpg, and put it in the images folder in your modified folder

What I was hesitant about here is that; $template_name = 'Classic Contemporary Green';.

Was not sure how that would effect the system over-all since there was already a per-installed color system in place.

Your right, from post #14

To be honest, when I started with Zen Cart, the override system was the hardest part for me to get my head around. Once I did, I couldn't figure out why I thought it was so hard.

The system is very simple, but the book did create for me quote a bit of confusion. If the book had originally explained the system like you guys did here to me, I never would have had to post this original message here.

Thank you guys for all your patience and help. I will have many more questions as I move along here, but now I know to forget the book and stick to the forums.....

Re: Sales message goes here help request

I have made the changes as you suggested. What I don't get is why I can not see these lines on the site. ie;

$template_name = 'modified';

$template_version = 'Version 1.0';

$template_author = 'TheMortician4';

$template_description = 'This template set is based on the classic green, and I have modified it, and named it modified.';

does the system actually show these items on the store, or are they juest for later coding purposes?

afo:

You don't really need much in the way of HTML skills for Zen Cart. It's mostly a matter of CSS and php (in that order).

What should I use to modify the *.css files? Any suggestions?

They are not supposed to be seen on the site, what/why would a customer care?
They are variables for the system to see, and distinguish which template to use.

As for the css editing you can google it, I use notepad++

Okay I was just wondering, thought they did as some other systems actually show that info.

Question,

I want to pull products third party (the term I will use for this purpose). Let me explain:

I want to offer products that are offered through other sites: example: see the link - http://www.cafepress.com/make/custom-t-shirts

What I would like to be able to do is have my customers be able to select these items from my site and use the cafepress site's designer to place the order, which in turn is then processed through my site.

Does Zencart have the capabilities to do this? or is this even possible? If so, how?

Re: Sales message goes here help request

I don't know about this, but from my understanding it shouldn't be possible. Why would cafepress like you to use their resources?

In the last week I crossed a thread with a site that had a shirt design tool implemented; i'd suggest you look for a tool like that to put in your site; you can look for the threads in the last week or so, either here in templates etc. or in the general forum..

Anyhow, I believe it would be better for you to start new threads for each unrelated topic you have, you'll get more chances to have others help you.
If I had a solution for your last question I wouldn't know by the title of this thread.

Understood....

As for cafepress' position, they offer the ability to sell their products through their site by setting up your own, and if the are selling a product and you are adding a commission, why would they care. to them a sale should be a sale., I will re-post this question on the forums, where is a good question. I will also try to contact them and see if there are any ways they have made this possible....
