Detail button on specials main page

Hi,
Newbie here .. is there a way to add Detail button on "specials" page (main_page=specials) other than editing pages=>specials=>main_template_vars.php.

I tried editing tpl_specials_default.php in my template folder but of no use . If there is any other way it would have been great since

pages dont allow overrides

                 Thanks in advance
                                              Anoop
