Looking for Seo/Backlink help and advice

Hi i am trying to promote my website to try and generate some sales through it. I have read various bits on the net about creating back links to promote my website but all i seem to come accross is people asking for money to do this for me and then i don't know what i would be paying for or if i will be just getting scammed. So what i am after if anyone can point me in the right direction for an idiots guide on how to make these back links and seo tutorials, Or is it going to be to hard for a newbie if you have no idea on this sort of thing at all.

Also how do i know my site is even ready to try and promote it if anyone has advice on this aswell. Also as its childrens clothes and accessories shop i am up against alot of competion so is there certain things i need to do to give me a chance of competing on the web.

I have just started a 3 month trial with amazon.co.uk aswell and had a few sales through there is it worth keep putting my web address in the product description to try and promote it.
