sporadic troubles connecting to database

Getting a message saying unable to connect to database. There are a whole lot debug txt files in cache.

Is this a clean install of 1.5 or and upgrade?

It's a clean install. Installed by hand, not using Fantastico or anything similar.

How often is 'sporadic' ?

Other than these sporadic episodes is the store otherwise functioning OK?

Are there any specific circumstances or conditions that will invoke the issue?

Basically, we need a lot more clues than you have given.
